Before you begin

Useful tips for practising Hatha – yoga

  • Wait for 4-5 hours after a heavy meal or 2-3 hours after a light snack. Be realistic. You do not need to wait so long if you feel empty on your stomach earlier, than recommended above.
  • If possible, go to a toilet before you start.
  • Practise in loose-fitting clothing and bare feet.
  • Use a non-slip mat or floor. The floor should not be too cold.
  • Fold blankets neatly when preparing to use them, as any creases will disturb your practice.
  • When the weather is warm and pleasant, try to practice outside, in your garden or in a park. Choose relatively even ground. You may be surprised by how fresh air makes you feel more relaxed, which quickens your progress.
  • Seek advice if you experience difficulties in practice. Your difficulty may be a common one and there is likely to be a solution. In the meantime, avoid straining too much.
