Back conditions can stem from a range of conditions such as poor posture, muscular imbalances, lack of core support and pelvic instability. Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles and improving posture by straightening the spine.
Good posture is essential for the maintenance of healthy backs and central to Pilates. A lot of emphasis is spent on correct body alignment, which creates a body awareness of the proper positioning of the spine and the pelvis. This allows the muscles to work correctly and supports the joints so the body is in balance.
Susan Hill 35, ‘Pilates taught me how to stand straight and improved my posture. I now walk taller and look noticeably leaner, longer and feel five years younger!’
The focus of Pilates is on the "powerhouse" region of the body which includes the muscles of the abdominals and the lower back. Many forms of exercise simply focus on strengthening the surface muscles such as the 6-pack abs, lattisimus dorsi, (lats) and rectus abdominals. But Pilates works the deeper muscles - the muscles of the pelvis floor, the psoas muscles and the transverse and oblique abdominal muscles. All movement emanates from these muscles and are crucial in the support and stability of the spine.
John Sinclair, 57 ‘I began Pilates after suffering a herniated disc in my lower spine; on a bad day I was barely able to put my socks on by myself. I was advised by my physiotherapist to begin Pilates to build up core strength and to improve my posture. One year later and my back is now stronger. I look forward to my sessions and I have made some good friends who all believe in the benefits of Pilates in rehabilitation and general well-being.’
Pilates increases the range of motion in the spine by allowing the muscles of the back to work in a flowing harmonious way with the deep core muscles. As you strengthen your core muscles you will notice that your flexibility increases allowing you to perform more complex Pilates exercises
The focus on strengthening the core/powerhouse muscles and improving postural awareness are beneficial to everyone wanting to improve genreral well being and especially benefiical for the alleviation and prevention of back pain. It is a very safe form of exercise because so much attantion is paid to correct alignment and people who perform Pilates reguraly have an increased body awareness that allows them to move with greater grace and ease.
