Pilates: The Exercise Phenomenon That Is Here To Stay

The Pilates method is a form of physical and mental conditioning that is carried out using over 500 well-designed, choreographed movements in a balanced sequence.  The aim of the technique is to create a fusion between the mind and body that results in balanced, graceful, flowing movements.  Emphasis is not on quantity but on the quality of each movement, which requires complete concentration and precision in order to achieve optimum results.

Pilates is said to be unique because it incorporates the mind and body to work as a whole integrated system, unlike most exercise techniques that work individual muscles groups in isolation.

Origins:

Pilates originated in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates who named his system Contrology, because he believed his method used the mind to control the muscles, thus creating a strong, healthy balanced mind and body.  His pioneering exercises were based on eight basic principles, (relaxation, concentration, alignment, breathing, centring, co -ordination, flowing movemnets and stamina) that all have to be utilised in order to carry out the exercises correctly and to achieve maximum benefit.

The Benefits of Pilates:

‘Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates and elevates the spirit’ Joseph Pilates.

With regular work outs pilates has been proven to have a range of fitness, health and atheistic benefits, including:

  • Improved postural alignment
  • increased flexibility, strength and mobility of the spine
  • long, lean and toned muscles
  • relief of stress, tension and promotion of well being and recovery from injury and chronic pain.
  • Who can do Pilates?

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.  If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old.  If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young’ Joseph Pilates

The good news is that Pilates can be practised by almost anyone regardless of age, physical fitness or body condition.  While Pilates is still popular with professional athletes, dancers and gymnasts it is just as beneficial to middle aged or elderly people as a Pilates program can be tailored to suit each personal circumstance and physical condition.

‘I was first diagnosed with osteoarthritis when I was 22. Twenty years later, after a series of back problems, it was difficult to bend enough to put my shoes on.
I began Pilates after in 1997 and the exercises my teacher devises and adapts for me enable me, at 66, to maintain and enjoy a busy life.  An added benefit is the “Pilates friends” I have made and who I look forward to seeing on Sunday and Tuesday mornings
    Adrianne LeMan.

    Where can I practice Pilates?

There are two types of pilates classes to choose from - apparatus or mat work, that are available at all levels from beginners to advanced and include specialised classes such as pilates for back care and pre and post natal pilates.

Mat work classes are the most accessible to the public and classes are run in gyms and village halls across the country.  Most classes have a maximum of 12 clients and last between 60 and 90 minutes.  The advantage of mat work is that once confident, you can practice the exercises at home.

Apparatus classes are performed in a studio and are taught on specialised pieces of equipment such as reformers, barrels and wunda chairs.  The advantage of apparatus classes is the resistance of the machines that work the muscle groups more effectively than mat exercises thus sculpting, toning and lengthening the muscle groups to achieve noticeable results within a few sessions.
