How to use Khadi Hair Colours?

All herbal hair colors from Khadi are totally free from preservatives, color intensifiers, oxidizing agents and other toxic and hazardous ingredients. All of our Khadi products have been awarded a BDIH Certificate (the seal of authentic natural products without any chemicals). The priority of the Khadi Company is to protect your health and well-being, as well as providing you with the products that will make your hair look beautiful and healthy.

Important! Please read thoroughly the information below before you start using Khadi Hair Colours.

Shiny and healthy looking hair

The dyes are composed from natural ingredients only, like henna, other plants and Ayurvedic herbs, which all together create a fantastic result on your hair – a very intensive, rich colour, and make your hair strong and glossy. The Khadi Hair Colours work more intensively on your hair then other chemical products, which is a good thing to remember about when buying dye for your hair.

You can mix different Khadi colours without any strict rules, only to achieve the individual colour you desire. The proportions however depend on not only the shade you would like to achieve, but also the density and thickness of your hair, as well as the present colour of it.

Unfortunately, because the Khadi Hair Colours are free from any chemical ingredients, there is no hair lightening option, although the company is presently working on the natural recipe for blonde hair.

Different hair types

There are basically 5 types of hair: fine, medium, coarse, thick and thin, and it is good to know which type of hair is yours before you start dyeing it.

The present colour also influences the result of your hair dyeing.

If you do not know your hair type, there are ways to check it, (if interested go to the article ‘Different Hair Types’ ) but you can also test the Khadi dye on a small amount of hair and then shorten or prolong the time of keeping the dye on your hair, according to the colour result you would like to achieve.

Color Test

Before the proper dyeing, the best is to do a test on a small amount of hair taken from your hair brush or comb to make sure that you receive the desirable effect. Separate a strand of hair, put a small amount of dye on it and keep it on for 30 minutes. Then wash the dye off with tepid water. Repeat the test a few times, keeping the dye on for 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Remember, that the final result will be possible to observe only after 24 to 48 hours after finishing the process of dyeing.

What you need to dye your hair

To dye your hair properly, you will need the following:

  • Khadi Hair Colour
  • A medium size bowl (glass or ceramic)
  • Water
  • A pair of latex or non-latex gloves
  • A towel to protect the clothes
  • A small brush to put on the dye
  • A bathing cap/cling film
  • A towel to keep the temperature of the dye paste warm after the application
  • How to prepare your hair for dyeing?

Wash the hair with a natural hair wash (silicon free) before the application. Remember, that the silicon blocks the absorption of the natural ingredients from Khadi products. After washing your hair, dry it and use the Khadi Hair Colour.

Generally, the hair regularly washed by shampoos with silicon, loses the ability to absorb natural conditioners and dyes. If you are not sure about your shampoo’s ingredients, 2 weeks before the planned dyeing start using a deeply cleaning hair wash or a hair peeling.

How should I prepare the dye?

Mix the proper amount of the powder with water; for shoulder length hair about 80 grammes of the powder is enough. Stir it gently, until the mixture becomes like thick yoghurt. The mixture should be dense enough to hold on to your hair. Be careful, not to breathe in the powder!

Individual tips for using each Khadi Hair Colour:

    Khadi Pure Henna Red

Mix henna with lemon juice and place in a warm place for 12 hours. Thanks to this simple tip, you should achieve a beautiful, intense color.

Khadi Pure Henna Red/ Khadi Henna, Amla & Jatropha/ Khadi Henna & Amla

To mix the powder use very warm water (about 80°C) to achieve more intense colour. Then wait until the water cools down to the temperature that is comfortable for your skin. Never put on a hot mixture on your scalp.

    Khadi Light Brown/Dark Brown/Natural Hazel/ Black

To mix use only warm water of the temperature of 50°C

    Khadi Black Pure Indigo

To mix use only tepid water.

How should I put Khadi Hair Colour on my hair?

Protect the clothes as the stains may be impossible to remove.

Use gloves to avoid dyeing the hands and nails.

Put the dye on the hair layer on layer, using a brush. Start from the top of the scalp and move around putting the mixture on each strand. Thoroughly cover all of the small hair growing on the forehead line and behind the ears. When you cover the whole scalp, use a band or a cotton stripe to bind around the head below the forehead, behind the ears and below the hair at the nape, to prevent the dye from flowing down.

Then put on the bath cap/cling film and remove any dye left on the skin, ear tips and nape with a wet pad. Finally, cover the head with a towel or put on a woolen hat to keep the warm temperature of a dye mixture.

The time you should keep it on depends on the results you would like to achieve and varies from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

How should I remove the dye?

Wash the dye off with tepid water only, until there is no colour flowing down from the hair and the water is clean.

Do not use any shampoo or styling hair products on the hair for 24-48 hours after dyeing, to allow the natural dyeing ingredients to mix with the structure of the hair. Then wash your hair with a shampoo, optionally using a hair oil before (a good one is Khadi Amla Hair Oil), which helps to keep the colour on your hair for longer and prevents the hair from drying out.

    How to use hair oils?

Massage a small amount of the oil onto the scalp and hair (to the tips of the hair) and leave on for at least 1 hour (2 hours or overnight gives the best results). Then wash the hair with a shampoo or a hair wash.

Important! The color may become a bit deeper after the first wash. If it does not satisfy you and you prefer it lighter, then next time you dye your hair, keep the dye on for a shorter period of time, or blend the dyes in a different proportion. You can create endless shades using Khadi Hair Colours!

Senna/Cassia is recommended to be used after having your hair dyed blonde to repair the hair damage, or between having your hair treated with natural henna or indigo.

For the best result you can mix Khadi Senna/Cassia with Khadi Henna and Amla, the proportions depend on your individual expectations.

It might happen, although very rarely, that after using Senna/Cassia fair and thin hair get a greenish shade, therefore always test the product before using.

For using follow the instructions for Khadi Pure Henna Red.

    Khadi Amla

Regular using of Khadi Senna/Cassia Neutral mixed with Khadi Amla and lemon juice may give the effect of lightening your hair.

Special Guidelines for Dyeing Grey Hair

You can use Khadi Hair Colours to give your grey hair a variety of colour and shade. In most cases dyeing your hair once is enough to cover all of the grey hair and get the desirable colour result.

Be careful when using Khadi products, which have a lot of indigo, e.g. Khadi Dark Brown or Black, as they may leave on your hair a greenish or bluish shade. The result always depends on your individual hair type, therefore it is recommended to do a test before you dye the whole of your hair. In this way you can make sure the product will cover your grey hair after using it only once.

If the Khadi product has not covered your hair completely or the shade does not satisfy you, then the doubled process is recommended.

Two steps on how to dye your grey hair:

  • Dye your hair to red with Khadi Pure Henna Red following the instructions of using.
  • After washing off Pure Henna Red or next day apply the brown shade of your choice or Black Pure Indigo.
  • More details on how to do this:

  • Put a thick layer of Pure Henna paste on your hair, starting with the nape hair and moving up to the top of the head.
  • Put on a plastic washing cap (or use cling film) and a towel. Wait 2 hours, wash the henna off and dry the hair.
  • Prepare Black Pure Indigo following the instructions of using (do not use any acidic juices, only water).
  • After mixing, do not wait, like with henna colours, but put it on your hair straight away.
  • Wrap your hair in cling film and a towel.
  • Leave the dye for 1 hour, and then wash it off with warm water.
  • The deep and rich colour will be visible after 3 days.
  • Mixing Different Products

You can individually mix Khadi Black Pure Indigo and Khadi Pure Henna Red to achieve light brown, brown, dark brown and black colours on your hair. Mixing these 2 products will give you more intense and shiny brown shades than ‘ready-to-go’ Khadi Light Brown or Khadi Dark Brown. More details you can find on   ……..

    How to cover regrowth?

Prepare the powder like you do when dyeing the whole length of the hair. You can divide individual strands using clips and put the dye only on the first few centimeters of the hair.

If your hair is not too long, then you can use only ¾ of the powder to dye the whole of the hair and then make the left ¼ useful when you need to dye regrowth.

    Tea, coffee, salt and wine

To keep the colour for even longer, you can add to the dye mixture a teaspoon of strong, black tea or coffee, or a teaspoon of salt. If you want to have more red shades, then add a teaspoon of red wine. Beware that alcohol may damage your hair, so you have to heat the wine up before to distillate the alcohol.

    Fantastic Khadi Hair Oils

Sometimes your hair may become drier after dyeing it, especially when you normally have dry hair. To avoid this, you can reduce the amount of water in the dye mixture and add 2 table spoons of a high quality, silicon free hair conditioner (the best would be a natural conditioner).

However, hair oils do the best job. Khadi Amla Hair Oil is a must have for everyone who has his/her hair dyed.  It strengthens the hair, makes them glossy, shiny, healthy looking and gives them those unusual, individual shades and shines.

After using a hair oil, your hair becomes silky soft and easy to style.

Never add oils to Khadi hair colours as oily substances prevent herbal dye from blending with the hair structure.
