Getting rid of cellulite – practical advice

Cellulite is a nightmare for many women, especially in summer, when they feel like uncovering a bit more of their not-so-lovely-looking skin. But doctors say that in the early stages, when cellulite is first visible as an ‘orange peel’ effect, it is nearly 100% reversible, but only when properly and punctually treated. Sounds amazing! Although liposuction methods, enzyme therapies, oral drugs, laser, ultrasound and electrical treatments are reportedly effective, a simpler and much cheaper solution is possible. A combination of controlled diet, specific exercise, massage and cosmetic treatments applied topically have been proved successful.

What is cellulite?

The problem of cellulite affects most women to varying degrees, no matter plump or skinny. It is all due to a microcirculation failure, which can be caused by hereditary factors, lack of exercise, hormone dysfunction, blood circulation problems, connective tissue weakness, premature skin ageing, poor nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption, etc.

When due to weakened blood vessels and capillaries the skin loses its elasticity, small particles of fat push their way up to the skin’s surface and make it bumpy and uneven. This movement of fat hinders the circulation even more and causes bigger fat and water accumulation under the skin, which in turn increases the amount of cellulite. But this unwanted wheel of cause and effect can be broken.

The first sign of cellulite is usually the "orange peel" effect, which usually appears on the thighs, buttocks and tummy. At this stage any treatment is likely to be effective. For those, whose cellulite is more established, do not panic. Although it is unlikely to be totally reversible, it can be significantly reduced.

Fat burning exercises

Losing a few pounds will definitely make your skin look better. Therefore it is good to do some intense, constant exercise for 40 minutes – at least 3 times a week. This could be: aerobic exercises, gym work-outs, biking, jogging or aquaerobic exercises. For those who suffer from spine problems or joint pains swimming is the best solution.

Some people find that dancing sessions help them to burn their excess fat. Dancing also seems to be a fun alternative for those who do not enjoy ‘proper’ exercise.

Shape your body with yoga

Doing pilates or yoga for 30 minutes at least 3-4 times a week is the best way to tone your body and regain the smoothness of the thighs, tummy and buttocks. These exercises, which are a lighter and less invasive version of regular work-outs, are very gentle for the body and help your muscles without too much exertion. They also help you to relax, unwind and assist in proper breathing, which is essential because when the body is properly oxidized, the cellulite reverses.

Pilates and yoga are especially recommended for thin, slightly built women, who get easily exhausted when they do intensive exercise.

Morning and evening stretches

Try to exercise in the morning for about 10 minutes to activate the tummy and buttock muscles. You can do a few body and knee bends, sit ups, leg swings, etc. In the evening, it is good to do whole-body stretches for at least10 minutes (you can find the link to the stretching exercise below). Alternatively, a 30-minute brisk walk is highly recommended, because it not only engages the legs and buttocks but also provides more oxygen to the whole body. Remember to open the window every time you exercise at home.

Proper cosmetics and massage

Intense massage done to the parts of the body affected by cellulite helps to improve circulation increases the elasticity of the skin and burns up the access fat. When you decide on this type of treatment (which silmuntanieously encourages weight loss), it is always better to buy 5-6 sessions rather than a single one to maximize the effects.
