Three easy ways to check your hair type

Fine Hair

Approximately 15 % of all women and probably a similar percentage of men have fine hair. When fine hair is healthy, you can recognize it by its natural shine, as it reflects light best of all the hair types. Fine hair easily gets damaged and when it does, it becomes limp, lifeless and flat. Blonde hair is usually fine and quite thin, of a diameter of 50 microns. If you have fine hair, you probably have experienced some problems with gaining volume and getting the hair to hold the style you want it to. Volumizing products as well as styling gels and mousses seem to be a must, at least according to the professionals. I am not personally a great fun of chemical products and my fine hair does not like them, too, especially when treated with them for a long time. Therefore, I was very surprised and delighted when I used a natural hair oil (it was Khadi Amla Hair oil). My hair changed completely, it became soft and gentle, regained its natural shine and got stylish only after blowing it dry, without using any additional styling products. For fine hair a gentle shampoo is recommended, the best would be a natural hair wash and conditioner. When you put on the conditioner of your choice, concentrate on the lengths and ends of your hair rather than the roots. A short blunt cut with streaks is a better idea for you than layers and long hair. In general, everything that adds volume and create the illusion of more hair would make your hair look better.

Medium Hair Type (Normal Hair)

Most people have medium hair (sometimes called ‘normal hair’), which is not too thick and not too thin, and has a diameter of 60-90 microns. Generally, it pops in between the fine and coarse hair type and is very easy to style.

Coarse Hair Type

Coarse hair has a diameter of 100 microns and above. It is usually rough, heavy, strong, wiry, wild, and often dry. It demands conditioning to keep it under control. The best hairstyle for you is long hair and a layered cut (a blunt cut should be avoided).

Thick and Thin Hair Type

It is worth remembering that thick or thin hair has nothing to do with the diameter of each hair strand. This is simply the amount of hairs you have on your head.   The average head has 100,000 - 150,000 hairs and normal daily fall-out is 50-100 hairs. You are the owner of thick hair when you have 150,000 strands or more on your head, while the term’ thin hair’ refers to 90,000 strands and less. Thick hair looks best in layers, while thin hair in a short cut.

Find out your hair type

First way

After you wash your hair, do not blow it dry but let it dry naturally. How long does it take? If it takes less than 1 hour, it means you have fair or thin hair. If you have to wait longer than 1 hour, you are the owner of thick hair.

Second way:

Pull out a single hair (ouch!) and place it on a sheet of white paper. Then start a scientific observation and you will get to one of the three possible conclusions:

  • Your hair is difficult to see on a white background and is not easily felt between your fingers when you try to pull it out – the conclusion: fine hair
  • Your hair is easily seen against white paper but does not feel wiry between the fingers – the conclusion: medium hair
  • Your hair is very visible on the white background and feel quite wiry between the fingers – the conclusion: coarse hair
  • Third way:

Make a ponytail and put your thumb and index finger around it to make a circle. Then measure its diameter. Your hair is thin if the circle is 0.7 inch (18 mm) across or less. Your hair is thick if the circle is 1 inch (25 mm) accross or more. Anything in-between is medium thickness or average. It may sound unbelievable, but some people have more than one texture on their heads at the same time! And it is crucial to know your hair type if you want to choose the best dye for your hair and use it properly, according to your individual features.
