‘Laid Back’ Kapha

If you have never read or heard about the Ayurveda body types, firstly we recommend going to the article “Vata, Pitta or Kapha? Test Your Body Constitution!” Then you can come back and explore more…

The General Characteristics of Kapha

Kapha people are quiet, very down to earth and balanced personalities. They characterize with great endurance, both physical and mental, therefore they are able to launch and carry on even the most difficult and hard jobs. They usually act methodically, considering carefully each step in life, which makes them slow but consistent and very determined goal achievers. When once fixed on the aim, they are very difficult to be disturbed or distracted in any way. However, this also has its negative consequences, as Kapha people have a hard time to accept new ideas and fashions, mostly because they are happy with their present status and want to keep things as they are. Therefore,  it takes them ages to accept any change. Although being up to date is not Kaphas’ strong side, they can impress others with an excellent long term memory! And when balanced, they emanate with peace, relaxation and are precious constant associates for their friends and relatives.

Physically, Kapha people are usually heavily built, with wide hips and/or massive shoulders, which make them look strong (as they really are physically strong). They usually can show off their beautiful, smooth, oily and healthy looking complexion, and strong, thick, shiny and rather dark hair. When balanced, they usually do not eat much and do not feel hungry often, as their digestion is sluggish. It is not easy for a Kapha person to wake up early in the morning, but she or he definitely enjoys a good deep night’s sleep, with no brakes and disturbance. Kapha enjoys good food, especially bitter, spicy meals with a lot of herbs, which stimulate their sense of smell. Kapha people are usually very healthy and when the cold and flu season comes, they seem to be more resistant to any infections then other constitutions. And what they really hate is wet and cold weather.

What makes Kapha unwell?

Although Kapha people are generally healthy, their slow way of life may sometimes do them bad, especially when:

  • They became a little bit too slow, apathetic, and ponderous, and do not utilize their inner energy
  • They do not initiate any new tasks or goals to achieve.
  • Spent too much time outside when it is cold and wet.
  • They hold on to the old order too much and do not want to change under any conditions.
  • All of these may cause some negative consequences, like:

  • Chronic stress, causing introvertic behavior
  • Depression, brake-downs
  • Jealousy, envy, greediness and gluttony
  • Pale complexion and cold hands and feet
  • The feeling of body heaviness, especially in the morning
  • Putting on weight  (when feeling stress, Kapha looks for consolation in food)
  • Too much sleep
  • Problems with the respiratory system: too much mucus, a cold, bronchitis, sinus infection, etc.
  • Swellings and the feeling of heaviness in legs
  • Allergies
  • Diabetes
  • How to help Kapha?

Unlike Vata or even Pitta, Kapha suffers from the lack of activities and constant personal development. Here Kapha people can find a few tips on how to help themselves:

  • Try to use as much of your physical and mental potential at work as possible.
  • Utilize the still left energy practising different sports, suitable for Kapha, e.g.: jogging, football, rugby, dance, aerobic, fencing, rowing, weight lifting.
  • Do not block yourself but try to develop constantly (new courses or projects are always welcome).
  • Learn to be more flexible, extend your own adaptation limits by causing changes in your life on purpose, and then adapting to them.
  • Be ready to sacrifice some of your ‘perfect’ stability for your better mental health.
  • Control your diet, eat less sugar, fat and salt.
  • Do not stay out long when it is wet and cold.
  • Have your bedroom painted in a peachy color.
  • Try to sleep on your right side.
